Viral video and view-count statistics

How many views is viral?

Short answer

There is no official threshold. In our library, the 35 campaigns that report a view count range from 1.3 million to 18 billion views, with a median of 6.8 million. For a brand campaign, treat 1 million views as the floor, then judge it by how fast it got there and how far it travelled beyond your own followers.

Read this as a direction, not a precise trend. Recent campaigns in the library come mostly from news coverage of new launches, which favours billboards, stunts and product drops. Older campaigns made the cut because they are still talked about years later.

The startup and older-campaign figures partly reflect survivorship: the startups in the library are mostly breakouts like Dollar Shave Club, Hotmail and Robinhood, which are remembered because the result was big.

Methodology

  • Library figures come from the Viral Manager library of 1,041 viral marketing campaigns (1984–2026) as it stood on 5 October 2026. 999 of 1,041 campaigns (96.0%) link to a source, across 175 publications and sites.
  • Tags. Each campaign has one main tactic, one industry, one brand size and product type, one to three goals and a season where relevant, set by the Viral Manager editors from public reporting.
  • Results. A campaign counts as having a result only when public reporting states a number, an award, a sell-out or a measurable backlash. We don’t estimate results.
  • Industry figures come from the organisations named next to each number, linked to the page we checked. Forecasts are marked as forecasts. Figures from one country are labelled with that country.
  • Limits. The library is a curated set of campaigns that got attention, not a random sample of all marketing. It leans towards English-language press. Read library shares as “what campaigns that spread tend to look like”, not as odds of success.
  • Updates. We refresh this page every quarter. The next review is due in January 2027.
